Atlanta, GA #120 Leathercraft Classes

 

Basic Carving Class, January 14th, 9am-Noon. In this class, you will be making a small coin purse with a pretty floral pattern on the front and a small basket weave section on the back. We will take you through the process of carving project from a picture to a finished project and then you’ll do a small basket weaving. Class fee: $20.00

Guild Meeting, Noon-3pm. Local leather guild meeting will be taking place at this time. All skill levels, from beginner to master, are welcome. So, stop on by and see if joining the guild is right for you.

Open Workshop, January 21ST, 10am-3pm. Have a project that you need help on? Have some general questions that need to be answered? This is the day for you! Bring your projects and/or questions in today and we will help you out as best we can. There is no set class fee and no “limit” to size of the class. If you have a large project, please call ahead to make sure we have room at the table and remember to bring your tools!

Double Loop Lacing, January 28th, 10am-1pm. In this class, we are going to teach you how to do the most popular lacing – the double loop lace. Then you’ll have no excuses to shy away from making anything you want because “you don’t know how to do that”! We will be creating a Tom Thumb Purse for this class Class fee: $20.00

 

Intermediate Carving, February 4th, 10am-2pm. Working with a guest instructor, take your carving skills to the next level. Class fee is $30.00.

 

Rose Class, February 11th, 9am-Noon. Love flowers? Wish you had some that would last? Well, come take our class and learn how to make a leather rose. You will be cutting leather with a craft knife and then molding the pieces to form a beautiful rose! Once the pieces are cut and molded, you will dye them and we will let them dry before assembling. You will take home a pattern and a beautiful rose. Class fee is $20.00.

Guild Meeting, Noon-3pm. Local leather guild meeting will be taking place at this time. All skill levels, from beginner to master, are welcome. So, stop on by and see if joining the guild is right for you.

Mask Making, February 15th, 9am-Noon. Using lightweight veg-tan and a Styrofoam head, we will be making a mask, just in time for Mardi Gras. We’ll also be coloring the masks using either dyes or paints, so bring your “wicked” and “wacky” ideas. Class fee: $15.00

 

Braided Leather Bracelet, February 25th, 10am-1pm. This is a very easy way to make a classy, braided leather bracelet. We’ll provide the leather, lace, and button stud. You need to bring a sharp pair of leather scissors. Be prepared to have some fun and be amazed at how simple this bracelet is to make. Class fee: $20.00

 

Basic Knife Sheath, March 4th, 10am–3pm. Enjoy working with an instructor who makes knife sheaths on a professional level. We suggest that you bring the knife for which you would like to make a sheath. All supplies will be provided. Class fee: $35.00

 

Braiding 101, March 11th, 10am-Noon. Want to learn how to make some beautiful braids – round braid, square braid, and a mystery braid? This is a basic braiding class. These would make good key chains, zipper pulls, or bracelets. We’ll provide all the lace. You just need to come and have some fun. Class fee: $10.00

Coloring with Dyes – The Basics, March 18th, 10am-Noon. Want to learn how to dye your leather projects? This class will show you how to use our Eco-Flo line of products. We will be using finishes as a resist, introduce you to block dying, and using the Hi-Lite dyes, gel antiques, and acrylic & wax sealers. All materials will be provided. You will also get a copy of the Coloring with Eco-Flo book. Class fee: $15.00

Learn the secrets behind the art of carving beautiful custom designs into leather.  In this class, you’ll be shown the proper techniques to use the Basic seven tool set which includes a Veiner, Beveler, Camouflager, Pear Shader, Backgrounder, Seeder, and Swivel Knife. If you’re intimidated by dyeing leather, let our chemicals expert Luke give you his professional advice on where to begin. Learn the difference between the different types of dyes available for leather work as well as the appropriate ways to use them. But there is so much more to the treatment of leather than just dyeing, this class will introduce you to antiquing techniques, conditioners, finishes, resists, and edge treatment for the most professional look you can give any project. This class is for the experienced leatherworker who’s grown bored of the standard saddle or lock stitch. With our beloved Ray at the wheel, learn his techniques involving how to perform a European diamond stitch, a woven stitch, a “pretty” stitch, and a French seam, all guaranteed to up your leather game a few notches! It’s extremely recommended that you’ve attended our beginner’s stitching & lacing class in the past, or at least have a fair amount of leatherworking experience, if you’re interested in taking this class as some of these stitches will take a technical hand. Beginner’s may be turned down, tools will be provided but it’s recommended you bring your own if you have any – such as a stitching pony or needles.

If you’ve ever wished to build a purse or bag from scratch and learn the inner workings of how to do this from home without the need of expensive machines and fancy sewing jargon; this class is for you. Students will be making their bags from milled vegetable-tanned leather and dyeing their pieces individually. Those wishing to use a finished leather must pay for them separately. This is a two-part class to ensure there are no mistakes in rushing the bags for completion.

 

 

  • To be qualified to attend our classes, students are required to sign up for their desired classes one week in advance so we may gather the appropriate materials. Those who do not comply to this requirement will unfortunately be denied enrollment in the class for that day unless there is a cancelation from a student who previously signed up.

 

 

  • Effective immediately, we here at Tandy Leather 109 will be incorporating an open table policy on Mondays from the hours of 10 am – 4 pm. This is strictly a first come, first serve scenario. This is a beginner level class on leather carving/tooling. In this class you will learn how to use a swivel knife and basic Craftool stamps to create a simple carving. Knowledge and techniques you will learn are used in all intermediate and advanced forms of leather tooling.

BASIC LEATHER CARVING: This class will complete TWO projects using the BASIC 6 stamping tools.

Students will trace patterns.

Students will learn how to use a Swivel Knife, and the basics of basket weave stamping. The kit used in this class will be the 55502-00 Deluxe Kit. You may also bring your own tools, swivel knife and mallet.

You can purchase items #44126-01 Rounders and #4111-00 Pocket Coin Holder kit.

CASE MAKING CLASS 1 PM TO 3 PM SATURDAYS

 

Students will be taught how to measure items and make patterns for the cases to cover these items. Students will be taught various types of stitches that can be used to sew their cases together.

Our Basic Seven tooling class is taught every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm.  This is a NO fee class but usually requires purchased supplies between $50-$100 dollars.  Please call (801)966-0144 to schedule a 1-2 hour appointment.

Basic Leather Tooling Class ( Saturday  10am to 1:00 pm )

This class is for the hobbyist  that wants to learn basic skills to work with leather. We will go through the whole process of planning, designing, and completing a leather bag of your dreams. Class will be from 10 am to 1pm. We will be working with pre-finished leather ( i.e. Utility Veggi-Tan and splits) . These classes are designed to be standalone so you can come to the class that you’re most interested in (but you will get most by attending all).

Basket weave is a very common 2-D stamp used in a lot of leather designs. In this class we will be working with different basket weave and 3D stamps.

Learn how to set Snaps, use rivets, and install Conchos into your project. We will also go over how to install a bucket into straps, belts, and buckles.

Also learn how to use the latest Dyes, Stains, and Cova Leather Paints.

Stitching is a critical aspect of leather working. This class will cover the standard saddle stitch technique and others (using sewing Awls ) to join leather together that will give your project a professional look.

Learn how to use lacing to give your project the different look . For this class we will be focusing on single loop and triple loop lacing techniques. We will look at splicing and ending the project.

  Learn or brush up on the basics of Western floral tooling, and how to use the basic 7 tools of the trade! This course will get you started on how to create 3d images within leather, and lay the ground work for creating original designs.  We will supply the leather and some supplies for this course

Various types of leather are shown and discussed. Students will learn tanning methods, grades/quality and typical usage.

Our beginner’s class is a wonderful way to introduce yourself to Leathercraft! Over a series of 4 Saturdays our instructor will walk you through all of the necessary skills to start making awesome leather projects. Starting with cutting and casing leather, tooling and stamping, painting and dyeing, sewing and lacing, as well as edge and surface finishes.

Learn the steps to build your very own belt! You will be learning how to use the strap cutter to cut out your belt as well as edge beveling and edge slicking and how to use a strap-end punch. Basic Leather Craft Class

There will be 3 classes to complete basic leather crafting course.

Class 1: You will learn stamping of a leather coaster with basket weave stamp. Class will emphasize on basic leather knowledge that includes leather preparation and a proper and safe use of leather stamps to create designs. In second half of class, we will transfer a design on piece of leather for another project (if time permits).

Class 2: You will experience a bit more in carving leather techniques that starts with safe handling of swivel knife and with the help of various tools, you will be able to tool the project. You will complete the tooling part of our project in the same day.

Class 3: In this week, you have done stamping & tooling each project and now, will learn how to dye your project and will get to know more techniques to seal and finish your leather to a presentable state.
Again, if time permits and upon willingness to all students, you will be taught to various use of binding styles & few patterns of lacing.

Cost : You will buy & become our Gold/Elite members to participate in basic class. The membership is valid for 12 months and offers you huge discount on your purchases.

The coin pouch made with natural Veg-tanned leather, it is 4 ways open and close with snap mechanism. In this class, students will learn about how to cut leather with project pattern. Coloring will also be applying to this project. An opportunity to use leather hole punch, line 20 snap setters, edge beveller and slicker to make the project looks professional. All material and tools will be provided. This simple class is worth to try out and see if you are interested in leathercraft.

The bifold credit card case is made with Natural Veg-tanned leather that allows you to mold, fold, emboss and stain.  In this class, students will learn to use wind divider, diamond hole Chesil, and hand stitch to complete the project. Optional, student can purchase a decorative Concho and get it install on the credit card case.
