Atlanta, GA #120 Leathercraft Classes

Basic Knife Sheath, August 19th, 9 am–1 pm. Enjoy working with an instructor who makes knife sheaths on a professional level. In this basic sheath class, you will learn how to make a pattern for a sheath, transfer the pattern to leather, glue, assemble, sew, and dye what is often called a pouch sheath. You will leave the class with a fully functional sheath. Please bring a knife with either a single finger guard or no guard at all. Knives with large or double guards are usually not suitable for a basic pouch sheath. All supplies will be provided. Class fee is $35.00.

 

Armor - Gauntlets, August 26th, 9:30 am-3:30 pm. Taught by a master armor maker, come learn how to make gauntlets. All materials will be supplied. Class fee is $35.00.

(Option: If you would like claws, you will need to purchase some resin ones. Please let us know if you are going to do this so that we have enough in stock!)

Coloring with Dyes – The Basics, Sept. 9th, 10 am-1 pm. Want to learn how to dye your leather projects? This class will show you how to use our Eco-Flo line of products. We will be using finishes as a resist, introduce you to block dying, and using the Hi-Lite dyes, gel antiques, and acrylic & wax sealers. All materials will be provided. There is no cost for this class.

 

Belt Making, Sept. 16th, 10 am–2 pm. Learn how to make a belt starting with a cowhide strip. You will learn how to lay out your strap and make the billets. We will provide Chicago screws and a 42-48” cowhide strip. Tooling pattern layout will be discussed. Class fee is $20.00.

 

Basic Leathercraft, Sept. 23rd, 10 am–2 pm. This is a basic introduction to the various types of leathers – veg-tans and chrome-tans. Then using this knowledge, you will create a small card case using some basic sewing tools – groover, stitching chisel, needle, and thread. Class fee: $15.00

 

Mask Making, Sept. 30th, 10 am-1 pm. Using light weight veg-tan and a Styrofoam head, we will be making a mask, just in time for Halloween! We’ll also be coloring the masks using either dyes or paints, so bring your “wicked” and “wacky” ideas. Class fee: $15.00

 

Double Loop Lacing, August 9th.  In this class, we are going to teach you how to do the most popular lacing – the double loop lace. Then you’ll have no excuses to shy away from making anything you want because “you don’t know how to do that”! Each student must bring a wing divider, and a stitching (1 or 2 and either a 4 or 8 prong) chisel. We will provide the needles, lace, and leather. Class fee: $15.00

 

Basic Carving Class, August 16th. In this class, you will be making a small coin purse with a pretty floral pattern on the front. We will take you through the process of carving project from a picture to a finished project and then you’ll do a small basket weaving. Class fee: $20.00

 

Intermediate Carving, August 23rd. Using a floral pattern, we’ll work with you to enhance your carving skills. You must have carving/tooling experience. You must be familiar with tooling as the basics will not be covered. You will need to bring a: swivel knife, various bevelers, thumbprint/pear shader, leaf liner, and undercut beveler/lifter. Class fee: $30.00

 

Belt Making, September 13th. Learn how to make a belt starting with a cowhide strip. You will learn how to lay out your strap and make the billets. We will provide Chicago screws and a 42-48” cowhide strip. Tooling pattern layout will be discussed. Class fee: $20.00

 

Lamp Shade Class, September 20th & 27th. This is a two-Wednesday class. Learn how to make a 11” tall lamp shade that fits on a harp or hanging from a chain. In the first class, we’ll complete cut out all of the panels of the lamp, layout the holes, and start punching the holes. You will need to bring two round punches (3/32” & 5/32”) and a small roll of contact paper (Dollar store is great!). Homework will be your design completed as well as any dyeing/sealing and beveling/slicking of all the edges. In the second class, we’ll assemble the shade so you’ll need lacing needles. We will provide all the leather and lace. Class fee: $50.00

Professional Old West Holster class

We are honored to have Alan Soeliner from Chisholm’s Trail Leather as our special guest instructor.

He will be teaching the professional techniques of the old west style of making a holster.

Alan has received training from John O’Rouke, K.C. Krueger, Will Ghormley, and John Bianchi.

He has been to the National Cowboy Museum to examine originals by hand; recording construction details, thickness, color, tooling, stamping, sewing, and patterns.

He has been on several covers of “Guns of the old west” magazine and contributing countless articles.

His work has been in several movies including 3:10 to Yuma, The Assassination of Jessie James, and The Four Horseman to name a few.

Come join us in making this versatile seat for anyone, anywhere. Whether it is out fishing on South Padre, camping out in the wilds, or relaxing in your backyard with the barbeque pit roaring. The first week, we will be learning how to use common stamping tools to create the seat that will be almost too pretty to sit in. In the second week, we will be dying the leather as well as sealing the leather. This will give color but the sealing will protect it from the element it will be used in. The last of the trio of classes will be construction and finishing the seat. Then, you’ll have proof for everyone that you really are an outdoorsman…. Or a great leatherworker!

August 19th: “OL’ PAL” Dog Collar Class

Cost: $15:00

Join us in making a leather collar for your fur baby. You will choose to cut 3/4” or 1” leather from 6/7 oz. veg tan leather. We will supply everything you will need. But feel free to bring your own tools. Maul/mallet #3 beveler, 3/4” oblong punch, 3/4” or 1” end punch, 5/16” hole punch and edge slicker. This class will teach you the basics and you will leave with a custom functional dog collar and the knowledge to go home and make even more elaborate styles. Because of time restraints no tooling or dying will be done during class. But feel free to stay after and do additional customized work to your collar, supplies can be purchased to add bling.

You will need to measure your dog’s neck size by measuring snugly around your dog’s neck. You may also bring in your dog’s current collar and we can compare your measurements. Please do not bring your pet to class.

 

August 26th: Steampunk Style Bandolier Belt Bag (This class is longer than average and may run 3 hours)

Cost: Retail $30.00 Club Member $20.00 Includes leather and all supplies.

This is a fun class that with have you leaving here with a custom handmade Bandolier belt bag. You will cut leather from pattern supplied and punch all holes, tool and stain. Tools needed are maul/mallet, beveler, edge slicker, 1/8” and 1/16” hole punch, steam punk stamps.

 

September 2nd: Basic Tooling Class

Cost: Retail $10.00 Club Member Free. Includes FREE Leather Craft Handbook a $4.99 value.

Basic seven kit required. Basic seven kit can be purchased at time of class for only $29.99 retail $69.99 or buy our Deluxe Leathercraft Kit that includes the basic seven kit and leave with experience to tool leather and a number of projects to complete at home. Learn the basics of how to tool leather. All skill levels welcome. You will be creating a floral scroll piece that showcases the basic tooling techniques. You will also learn tracing techniques, shading leather using tools in your basic seven kit, tool care and how to care for and sharpen your swivel knife.

Edge Dressing Leather

Are you curious to know how to take a square cut edge of leather and make it look rounded and smooth?  Or maybe you want to protect the edge of your leather?  Perhaps you want that edge of brown leather to be black?  Well, it’s not that difficult and we would love to show you how.  Using a properly sized Edge Beveler, Slicker and slicking/dressing compound if applicable, your dressed edge will significantly improve the overall look of your project, as well as providing some protection for the edge of the leather where it’s most vulnerable to water damage and rot. 

 

We will provide these if you don’t have them, or you can buy your own before class

The Basics of Hardware – Selection & Setting

If you’re new to leatherworking or maybe you’ve only ever hand stitched your leather, come take this class and we’ll teach you all about how to properly size a rivet, (yes, that’s important), as well as how to set them.  We’ll also go through how to set other various hardware such as Eyelets/Grommets, Rivets & Burrs, Line, Segma and Glove Snaps, Decorative Spots and Screw Posts/Chicago Screws.  Each of these hardware settings have their own tool and technique for proper application.  With our many years of experience we will impart our personal tips and tricks to help you set each one properly…..Like how to get that Line 24 Snap to set straight….we understand and we can help!

The Basics of Stitching & Lacing

In this class we’ll go over the most important thread stitch for hand sewing leather…The Saddle Stitch!  It’s a remarkably simple stitch to perfect but there are a few variations of it and some tools that make stitching leather much easier.  We’ll also go over the basic Single Loop Laced Stitch, which is the perfect starter stitch for decorative lacing around the edge of your project.  Have you been using single or double prong lacing needles?  Have you ever tried the Perma-Lok needle?  Do you have Stitching Chisels for thread or lace?  Come and let us show you the advantages of these tools and we’ll help you decide what will work best for you.

Leather Top Hat Part 1 by Paul Viets

Our most popular class! This class will take you through the whole process of building a leather top hat from scratch. In this class, you will be taught how to make two different styles of trophy buckle for belts. You will be shown and make a stamped inlay buckle and tooled leather oval buckle. You will go home with not one, but two custom made buckles that will fit most generic belts.

Build a Belt

Build a belt from a blank! In this class, you will be constructing a belt from the ground up. You choose the width and length from one of our pre-cut blanks (Max width: 2in). You will punch all the holes, set all the hardware and pick out a buckle to top it all off. If you bring in a buckle from our previous week’s buckle class you will only pay $24! If you decide to tool the length of the belt you will not finish within the scope of the class but please feel free to come in during our weekday open tables and finish it up.

Approximately 1 inch thick unlined style notepad for all your important thoughts and project ideas. Description: In this class we will go over the basics of making a concealed carry leather gun holster including: laying out a patter, cutting the leather, choosing the angle of the holster, wet molding, and putting the holster together by either stitching or lacing. Description: In this class, you learn to prepare leather for carving, transfer a pattern to the leather, and how leather stamping tools work to help define your design. You will be carving a simple flower that incorporates all the basics you need to know in carving on leather. You’ll also gain a general knowledge of the leather and tools we carry to help you with your future projects.

Basic Stamping and Tooling: 1st & 3rd Saturdays of every month, 9:30am – 11am.

Everybody has to start somewhere, and this class will teach you the valuable basics of leather stamping and carving. You’ll learn about casing leather, the proper use of stamping tools and the swivel knife, plus a few other handy tips and tricks!

Limit of three students per class.

All students must call at least one week in advance to reserve spot.

No tuition, but each student must purchase or provide their own tools.

 

Leather Knife Sheath Class: By appointment only. $35.00 tuition.

We teach you how to make a knife sheath for any size and style of knife.

Intro to Carving: This is your “on ramp” to leather crafting. We demonstrate and teach the basic technique of leather carving. Calgary, AB #73 Leathercraft Classes

Classes are held on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 noon and repeated Saturday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm .We hold classes every month except August and December. There are four classes in the course, described below. Class size is limited to 8 people on a first come, first served basis. Classes must be booked in advanced.

 

Class I.  Leather knowledge and stamping.

Various types of leather are shown and discussed. Students will learn tanning methods, grades/quality and typical usage.

Students learn how to prepare leather for stamping and use stamptools to put designs into leather.

 

Class 2. Leather carving.

An overview of how to carve designs into leather. Students will be instructed on the correct use of the swivel knife, basic 6 stamptools and related items to achieve successful leather carving.

                     

Class 3. Colouring leather.

Various types of colouring agents for leather will be show and discussed. Particular attention paid to dyes, stains and finishes. Students will learn application techniques and expected results.

 

Class 4. Methods of construction.

Students will learn different methods of joining leather together. Emphasis on lacing, stitching plus associated tools to complete leather projects.

 

Class fees are as follows:

Basic Leather Craft Class

There will be 3 classes to complete basic leather crafting course.

Class 1: You will learn stamping of a leather coaster with basket weave stamp. Class will emphasize on basic leather knowledge that includes leather preparation and a proper and safe use of leather stamps to create designs. In second half of class, we will transfer a design on piece of leather for another project (if time permits).

Class 2: You will experience a bit more in carving leather techniques that starts with safe handling of swivel knife and with the help of various tools, you will be able to tool the project. You will complete the tooling part of our project in the same day.

Class 3: In this week, you have done stamping & tooling each project and now, will learn how to dye your project and will get to know more techniques to seal and finish your leather to a presentable state.
Again, if time permits and upon willingness to all students, you will be taught to various use of binding styles & few patterns of lacing.

Cost : You will buy & become our Gold/Elite members to participate in basic class. The membership is valid for 12 months and offers you huge discount on your purchases.

The class sizes average 6-8 students and for all ages 10+

Speciality Class : we also conduct specialized group project and requires minimum 6 students to organize such class. The cost of such class depends on projects and no. of participants.
