Description/Instructions: Create a personalized leather bound journal for yourself or a friend.  These make great gifts for your loved ones.

We recommend wearing clothing that you can get dirty.  Especially the classes that have dyeing and finishing which can be a bit messy.  ***Vinyl or latex gloves are also a good idea for these classes.

 

Open Table Wednesdays!  Bring your project in and work at our table. Get advice and bounce ideas off other crafters. First come first seated at the table. The table will be open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, feel free to come and go as you wish. This is a very informal schedule.

Atlanta, GA #120 Leathercraft Classes

July 1st – no class

 

Braided Leather Bracelet, July 8th, 10 am-1 pm. This is a very easy way to make a classy, braided leather bracelet. We’ll provide the leather, lace, and button stud. You need to bring a sharp pair of leather scissors. Be prepared to have some fun and be amazed at how simple this bracelet is to make. Class fee is $20.00.

 

Armor - Bracers, July 15th,10 am-3 pm. Taught by a master armor maker, come learn how to make bracers. All the techniques will be taught. All materials will be supplied. Class fee is $35.00.

 

Kid Friendly Class, **Wednesday** July 19th, 10 am–Noon. Does your child have an interest in leatherworking? Come to this class and we will get them started on the right path.  For your class fee, your child will be able to choose a project out of the Youth Leathercraft Set and learn how to stamp patterns. Then they can take the rest of the kit home. We recommend that your child wear something that can get dye on it. 8 years old and older please. Class fee is $25.

 

Basic Carving Class, July 22nd, 10 am-2 pm. In this class, you will be making a small coin purse with a pretty floral pattern on the front. We will take you through the process of carving project from a picture to a finished project and then you’ll do a small basket weaving. Class fee: $20.00.

 

Armor – Chest Piece, July 29th, 10 am-3 pm. Taught by a master armor maker, come learn how to make a Chest Piece. All the techniques will be taught. This is an intermediate class and you must have leather working experience. All materials will be supplied. Class fee is $35.00 plus one 7/9 oz. double shoulder (#9052-43), which will be on sale for $45.00/ea. for participants in this class.

 

Armor - Pauldrons, August 5th, 9:30 am-3:30 pm. Taught by a master armor maker, come learn how to make pauldrons to fit your shoulders. All materials will be supplied. Class fee is $35.00.

 

Rose Class, August 12th, 10 am-Noon. Love flowers? Wish you had some that would last? Well, come take our class and learn how to make a leather rose. You will be cutting leather with a craft knife/scissors and then molding the pieces to form a beautiful rose! Once the pieces are cut and molded, you will dye them and assemble. You will take home a pattern and a beautiful rose. Class fee is $25.00.

 

Basic Knife Sheath, August 19th, 9 am–1 pm. Enjoy working with an instructor who makes knife sheaths on a professional level. In this basic sheath class, you will learn how to make a pattern for a sheath, transfer the pattern to leather, glue, assemble, sew, and dye what is often called a pouch sheath. You will leave the class with a fully functional sheath. Please bring a knife with either a single finger guard or no guard at all. Knives with large or double guards are usually not suitable for a basic pouch sheath. All supplies will be provided. Class fee is $35.00.

 

Armor - Gauntlets, August 26th, 9:30 am-3:30 pm. Taught by a master armor maker, come learn how to make gauntlets. All materials will be supplied. Class fee is $35.00.

(Option: If you would like claws, you will need to purchase some resin ones. Please let us know if you are going to do this so that we have enough in stock!)

 

September 2nd – no class – DragonCon

 

Coloring with Dyes – The Basics, Sept. 9th, 10 am-1 pm. Want to learn how to dye your leather projects? This class will show you how to use our Eco-Flo line of products. We will be using finishes as a resist, introduce you to block dying, and using the Hi-Lite dyes, gel antiques, and acrylic & wax sealers. All materials will be provided. There is no cost for this class.

 

Belt Making, Sept. 16th, 10 am–2 pm. Learn how to make a belt starting with a cowhide strip. You will learn how to lay out your strap and make the billets. We will provide Chicago screws and a 42-48” cowhide strip. Tooling pattern layout will be discussed. Class fee is $20.00.

 

Basic Leathercraft, Sept. 23rd, 10 am–2 pm. This is a basic introduction to the various types of leathers – veg-tans and chrome-tans. Then using this knowledge, you will create a small card case using some basic sewing tools – groover, stitching chisel, needle, and thread. Class fee: $15.00

 

Mask Making, Sept. 30th, 10 am-1 pm. Using light weight veg-tan and a Styrofoam head, we will be making a mask, just in time for Halloween! We’ll also be coloring the masks using either dyes or paints, so bring your “wicked” and “wacky” ideas. Class fee: $15.00

Stitching is one of the most popular ways of assembling leather projects, so if you aren’t sure where to start, make sure to come to this class.  We will go over the saddle stitch techniques.  All supplies and tools will be provided.  Students must call/email on or before 7/12 to reserve a spot in this class. If no reservations have been made, class will be canceled.

Belt Making

Cost: $20 per person/belt + cost of buckle (if upgraded)

 

Making a belt is one of easiest entrances to leathercraft. In this class, we will learn how to: use a strip and strap cutter, punch appropriate holes, skive ends, bevel and burnish edges, make a belt keeper, and put in a belt buckle. All supplies and tools will be provided. A basic buckle is included in the cost, but you may upgrade to any buckle by paying for it. Students must call/email on or before 7/26 to reserve a spot in this class. If less than 3 reservations have been made, the class will be cancelled and any paid fees will be refunded. Class size maximum of 4 people.

Tri-fold Camp Chair ($35):  This class will teach students how to pattern and assemble a sturdy leather folding camp chair. We will be using itm# 1189-00 to build our tri-pod frame, and 10/12oz tooling leather for our seat. Fee includes materials and loaner tools.

Hand Sewing Leather ($15):  Sewing leather by hand has been the gold-standard for top-quality leather goods for centuries. Join us and learn how to sew like a pro! Coloring leather will discuss the types of leather stains and dyes and how to choose a coloring method for a project..

In this class you will be taught the basics of figure carving in leather.  The class will learn to case leather, how to transfer an image, use a swivel knife, and how to texture a figure.  **Must have Basic Tooling or the Equivalent experience to attend**

We will be making a case that will hold 4 swivel knives out of veg tan leather. Over the course of 2 weeks you will be cutting the leather from a pattern, tooling or stamping a design if you so desire, dyeing and finishing the leather, and stitching.  Tools you will need to bring or purchase include something to punch stitching holes, and whatever tools you need to carve or stamp your designs.

In this class you will learn how to make a razor strop for sharpening your blades/knives using a 3” wide by 18” long strip of veg tan leather.

Just in time for hunting season! You will cut the pieces from veg tan leather, tool or stamp the front piece as desired, dye & finish, and either stitch or lace the pieces together.  Tools you will need to bring or purchase include your tooling or stamping tools and a stitching/lacing hole punch.

Leather Braiding and Basket Weave Stamping

Class fee: $10

In this class, you will learn to make 3 and 5-strand mystery braids as well as a round braid perfect for lanyards and keychains. Our most popular class! This class will take you through the whole process of building a leather top hat from scratch. A generic pattern will be provided from which you will be able to adjust the hat to fit you and your own style as you wish. (i.e. Steampunk, Mad Hatter, Slash, etc.) This is a two-course class, so at the end of the second course (August 26th) you will take home a great project you fashioned yourself!

Depending on the complexity of the design you may not finish it within the scope of the class but please feel free to come back for our weekday open table and finish it then.

Belt Buckles

Class fee: $12 (Fee covers materials.)

In this class, you will be taught how to make two different styles of trophy buckle for belts. You will be shown and make a stamped inlay buckle and tooled leather oval buckle. You will go home with not one, but two custom made buckles that will fit most generic belts.

Build a Belt

Class fee: $30 or $24 (see description)

Build a belt from a blank! In this class, you will be constructing a belt from the ground up. You choose the width and length from one of our pre-cut blanks (Max width: 2in). You will punch all the holes, set all the hardware and pick out a buckle to top it all off. If you bring in a buckle from our previous week’s buckle class you will only pay $24! If you decide to tool the length of the belt you will not finish within the scope of the class but please feel free to come in during our weekday open tables and finish it up.

Class Description: Family photo frames are always on our shopping list as we keep our homes updated with current family photographs. Come to this class to make your very own and unique photo frame made from leather to display in your home. Learn how to stamp and/or carve the leather and assemble the photo frame kit. This class will include two spools of our Waxed Braided Cord to practice with. We will be going over how to properly twist/braid your thread prior to application on your project. Basic Tooling & Stamping: Everybody has to start somewhere, and this class will teach you the valuable basics of leather stamping and carving. You’ll learn about casing leather, the proper use of stamping tools and the swivel knife, plus a few other handy tips and tricks! Students must call 48 hrs in advance to make a seat reservation. Classes are held on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 noon and repeated Saturday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm .We hold classes every month except August and December. There are four classes in the course, described below. Class size is limited to 8 people on a first come, first served basis. Classes must be booked in advanced.

 

Class I.  Leather knowledge and stamping.

Various types of leather are shown and discussed. Students will learn tanning methods, grades/quality and typical usage.

Students learn how to prepare leather for stamping and use stamptools to put designs into leather.

 

Class 2. Leather carving.

An overview of how to carve designs into leather. Students will be instructed on the correct use of the swivel knife, basic 6 stamptools and related items to achieve successful leather carving.

                     

Class 3. Colouring leather.

Various types of colouring agents for leather will be show and discussed. Particular attention paid to dyes, stains and finishes. Students will learn application techniques and expected results.

 

Class 4. Methods of construction.

Students will learn different methods of joining leather together. Emphasis on lacing, stitching plus associated tools to complete leather projects.

Basic Leather Craft Class

There will be 3 classes to complete basic leather crafting course.

Class 1: You will learn stamping of a leather coaster with basket weave stamp. Class will emphasize on basic leather knowledge that includes leather preparation and a proper and safe use of leather stamps to create designs. In second half of class, we will transfer a design on piece of leather for another project (if time permits).

Class 2: You will experience a bit more in carving leather techniques that starts with safe handling of swivel knife and with the help of various tools, you will be able to tool the project. You will complete the tooling part of our project in the same day.

Class 3: In this week, you have done stamping & tooling each project and now, will learn how to dye your project and will get to know more techniques to seal and finish your leather to a presentable state.
Again, if time permits and upon willingness to all students, you will be taught to various use of binding styles & few patterns of lacing.
